How to: Maintain Stucco
How to: Maintain Stucco
Stucco isn't delicate; it is a stain that is suitable for exterior siding and interior walls. However, it doesn't require much maintenance. Although occasional patching and cleaning may be necessary, with the right tools and products, homeowners can complete the task. Here's how.
In making stucco, builders have used everything, from animal horns to whiskey, over the course of millennia. This durable plaster finish is suitable for both exterior and interior walls. The material is made of more common ingredients, such as cement and sand. However, it's still as strong as ever and can last up to 50 or 80 decades. To live up to its expected lifespan, stucco requires a little care and attention. The essence of the application will determine how much.
It may be enough to paint the stucco indoors once in a while. However, stucco siding is susceptible to weather extremes, such as the hot summer sun and the howling winter winds. It will also be exposed to dirt and dust that has been accumulated by passing traffic. A thorough inspection of the stucco surface is a must for many homeowners.
Cleaning Stucco
Regular Cleaning
Because stucco is porous, it absorbs dirt and stains indoors. It's usually easy to clean indoor stucco. Use a dampened nylon brush or a cotton rag to clean the stucco.
Heavy-Duty Cleaners
You may need to use more firepower in extreme situations, like when you have deep stains. Experts recommend that you use a chemical cleaner called trisodium phosphate or TSP rather than a traditional household cleaner. TSP is available in many hardware and home centers. However, homeowners need to be careful about how they use it. You can ventilate the area by opening your windows and running a fan. When working, you should wear rubber gloves, protective eyewear, and long-sleeved clothing. Once the area is safe, add the TSP to water in a container. Mix until you get a water-to-TSP ratio of 15:1. Use a nylon brush to apply the TSP on the affected area. Let the stucco dry for an hour.
Outdoor Cleaning
Stucco is often used outdoors as a siding material or as a garden wall finish. It tends to get dirtier, so it needs to be cleaned more frequently. This process is quick if you use a garden hose equipped with a spray nozzle and a power washer at the lowest setting.
- Spray the stucco using your chosen tool in a mist form.
- Next, switch over to a stronger spray and clean from the top. This will ensure that dirt from higher up doesn't settle at the base.
- After spraying, you should inspect the stucco to see if there is any lingering buildup. You should not scrub the stucco so vigorously that it grinds down.
- If the siding still has blemishes, there is one more step. Apply diluted TSP directly to affected areas using a pump sprayer (or a hose wand with a built-in soap reservoir).
- Allow stucco time to dry before you rinse it off.
