Stucco has a life expectancy of how many years?

Stucco, as a mixture of Portland cement, sand, & water, can be used to cover the interior and exterior walls of homes and buildings. Stucco is used by applying it wet to a stone or brick wall, onto a wooden or metal lattice, and then drying. Stucco surfaces can live up to 100 years if properly maintained and applied.

Application

For stucco to remain durable, it should be applied three times. The "ground" (or scratch) coats should each be 3/8 inches thick. The third coat, also known as the "finish," can be up to 1 inch thick. Both drainage points and expansion-contraction joints should be installed into the stucco to prevent moisture buildup and allow for temperature changes; if these are not installed correctly, even the most masterfully applied stucco will crack.

Aging

Stucco is generally stable for up to 20 years. Stucco will become less stable over time as it absorbs moisture and ages. In areas with drainage or windows, stucco can begin to separate and fall from the wall underneath. This is when repairs may be required, or it may eventually break down completely.

Repairs

Depending on the damage caused by weather and moisture, the stucco may need to be replaced or patched with new stucco with lime. Paint is a common way to patch stucco, as it can be difficult for the stucco to match.

Preventative care

It is important to wash your stucco walls regularly in order to prevent dirt buildup. You can pre-wet stucco with a garden hose. This will ensure that the wall is completely saturated. Next, pour the water down from the top to wash away any dirt. Allow the stucco to dry completely. Also, inspect stucco walls regularly, paying particular attention to areas near windows, doors, and drainage pipes. Look out for cracks or swelling. These areas might need to be patched for moisture damage repair. Catching them early will ensure that the structural integrity and strength of the stucco are not compromised.
